There are two events in the calendar that are especially thrilling for the sartorialist: the day in late spring when you can finally walk out of the house without a coat; and the moment in early to mid-autumn, weather dependent, when you must put it back on again for the first time.
Right now, we are at the latter point, which spells one thing only: an avid search for the perfect jacket or overcoat. The mission? To find one that will see us through autumn and winter in style, and which we won’t, when we emerge into spring many months later, be too fed up with wearing day in, day out.

It may not be the most practical of choices, but there is something deeply luxe about a rich cream coat. Strictly not for muddy winter walks, yet few things could look more glamorous when thrown over a frock for an evening out.
Shearling has been gathering momentum for the last few seasons and it only goes from strength to strength. As we all become warier of whacking on the heating at the slightest chill, these are just the ticket as the mercury drops – who knows, we may well soon be wearing them inside too.
Invest in a Herringbone coat and you will have a classic that can be worn for life. We think it works especially well in a boxy, slightly masculine cut.
A nod to a bit of big cat luxe never goes amiss – and it’s particularly prevalent this season, with catwalks awash with the vampish print (Dries Van Noten, Giambattista Valli). You can dress it up, you can dress it down – but one thing that never changes is that leopard won’t go out of style.
